Why a free AI tool site has a TEFL company behind it
Reasonable question, and worth answering directly rather than burying it in a footer.
tefl.ai exists because the group sells accredited TEFL training and wanted the tools teachers need to be free and unconditional. The commercial logic is not complicated: teachers who find the free tools useful sometimes go on to take a qualification, and teachers who never do still get the tools. There is no trial, no credit card and no drip feed towards a paywall.
What that means in practice is that the free tools for English teachers on this site are built to be genuinely useful on their own. If a tool only makes sense as an advert for a course, it is a bad tool.

There is also a jobs board at jobs.teflinstitute.com working with partner schools in more than thirty countries. Worth being precise about one thing: the group does not run supported placements. It publishes openings and helps you apply. It does not place you in a school.
The bit that is genuinely different: wellbeing
Teaching English abroad is not the same job as teaching at home. Culture shock, isolation, an unfamiliar workload and uncertainty about contracts are ordinary features of the first year, and they are rarely covered in a certification course.
The group runs a structured wellbeing programme rather than a page of advice about drinking water. It is delivered with Moonrise, an external wellbeing specialist, using Qigong and other holistic practices. Bringing in an outside provider was deliberate. A TEFL company is not a mental health organisation and should not pretend to be one.
Here is the honest caveat. We believe this makes a difference to teachers, but the evidence for that is currently our own reporting rather than independent longitudinal research. Treat it as a benefit worth having, not as proof that the training is better.

How to check any of this yourself
Accreditation is the part most people find hardest to verify, and the answer is that you should not take our word for it.
The Level 5 diplomas are Ofqual regulated qualifications awarded through Highfield Qualifications, under Approved Centre number 21335. You can look up regulated qualifications directly on the Ofqual register. The company is registered in Ireland as The TEFL Institute Limited, company number 613324, operating from Dungarvan in County Waterford.
Since 2017 the group has certified 161,000 teachers who now teach in 80 countries.
Ian O’Sullivan
Ian O’Sullivan is the founder and chief executive of The TEFL Institute Group. He started in TEFL in 2002 as Ireland country director for a large training company, and founded the business in 2017 from Dungarvan, County Waterford. Before any of that he worked on cruise liners and volunteered in Costa Rica, which is where the interest in teaching abroad began.
Twenty five years on, he has taught in four countries, written white papers on the sector and co-created one of the first online TEFL courses. He still spends most of his time on the parts of the business closest to teachers: the free tools on this site, the hiring briefings and the wellbeing programme.
Where this is heading
The direction of travel is a continuing relationship with a teacher rather than a transaction at the start of a career. One account holding your qualification, your teaching profile, your tools, your job matches, your continuing development and your wellbeing resources.
That is a strategy, not a finished product, and it carries an obvious risk. A company that adds tools, research, community, wellbeing and a jobs board can end up doing many things adequately and nothing excellently. The fair test is not how the list looks. It is whether each individual piece is good enough that a teacher would use it on its own merits.
Which is a reasonable standard to hold this site to as well.
